Riverside Golf Course Superintendent
Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department – Riverside Golf Course
– Full-Time (37.5 hour/week), year-round position with ability to work non-conventional hours year-round. Desired start date for this position is March 13, 2023 –
Performs responsible administrative and supervisory work overseeing and directing the maintenance of the Riverside Golf Course and related facilities. Utilizes golf course technical expertise to perform advanced technical operations, maintenance and construction tasks. Manages, plans and schedules all aspects of golf course maintenance and repairs. Interviews, makes hiring recommendations, trains and evaluates golf course maintenance employees. Selects and procures golf course maintenance equipment, materials, supplies, services. Assists in the preparation of equipment bid specifications. Ensures the proper care, operations, preventive maintenance and repair of golf course equipment, attachments and tools. Maintains and prepares a variety of records and reports to the Golf Course Manager. Implements and supervises safety and efficiency practices. Assists in developing and monitoring the annual golf course maintenance budget and recommends golf course capital improvement projects. Directs and supervises subordinate staff in the maintenance, repair and construction of tees, greens, fairways, ponds, roughs, cart paths, sand traps, trees, plants, shrubs and related areas. Analyzes disease, insect and other turf grass stress problems. Selects and applies pesticides, fertilizers and other controls to resolve problems. Operates, maintains, repairs, troubleshoots and constructs irrigation systems. Directs, supervises and oversees construction projects as assigned. Prepares or oversees preparation of specifications, contracts, documents, written, oral reports. Evaluates the work performance of golf course maintenance staff. Promotes positive and effective public relations. Prepares and maintains winter recreational areas, including cross country ski trails, sledding areas and ice-skating ponds at the golf course and City parks. Performs related work as required.
Requirements of Work: College degree related to turf/grass management or any equivalent combination of training and golf course maintenance experience. Minimum 5 years of experience in golf course management operations at a Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent level. Extensive knowledge and experience in the equipment, tools, materials, methods and standard practices used in the maintenance of golf course grounds, equipment and related facilities. Extensive knowledge and experience in turf grass management, soil conditions, agronomy and golf facility construction principles. Extensive knowledge and experience in organic land care practices. Extensive knowledge in the operation, installation and repair of irrigation and drainage systems, and of turf and insect problems. Experience in supervising and directing employees in golf course maintenance operations. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, other City departments, supervisors, employees, vendors and outside service providers. Experience in preparing specifications for equipment and supplies. Ability to supervise the safe operation, preventive maintenance and repair of mowers, vehicles, tractors, tools and equipment used in golf course maintenance. Ability to operate a variety of tools and equipment used in golf course maintenance operations. Extensive knowledge and experience in golf course maintenance budget preparation, management and inventory control. Excellent communications and organizational skills. Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills. Thorough knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting golf course maintenance operations including employment, health, safety and environmental stewardship standards. Fundamental understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf. Experience preparing and maintaining winter recreation areas, including cross country ski trails, sledding and outdoor ice-skating areas.
Necessary Special Requirements: Must possess a valid State of Maine Class C driver's license. Must have and maintain a good driving record. Maine Pesticide Masters License with Turf Category. Organic Land Care Certification (NOFA or similar). Offers of employment are contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory criminal background check.
Non-Union position – Grade C43 - Salary range/year: $69,307 - $98,808.

OVERVIEW
Responsible for the overall operation of golf course maintenance. These responsibilities include turf grass maintenance, property management, irrigation maintenance, pesticide applications and recording, personnel management, and member relations. The golf course superintendent works to create an environment where staff is enthusiastic, with open communication and respect for themselves, members, guests, and the property. The candidate must be able to work within the Audubon Sanctuary Program guidelines.
BASIC FUNCTIONS
- Directs and participates in the construction and maintenance of the grounds
- Administers and enforces cart rules, regulations, and policies for staff
- Is able to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver
- Is able to work closely with pro shop personnel for play schedule and coordination of special projects
EXPERIENCE

- Oversees subordinates in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment. Plans and budgets for additional or replacement capital equipment.
- Supervises and participates in the application and recording of chemical applications (fertilizers and pesticides) on the Club's grounds in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
- Supervises and controls all maintenance expenses associated with Golf Course Operations, including payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers.
- Develops annual operating budget and plans for maintenance and capital improvement projects.
- Maintains records and completes required reporting. Order parts, supplies and equipment as needed.
- Schedules maintenance practices around member play and outings to maximize efficiency and minimize disruption to members.
