GOLF SUPERINTENDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

GENERAL


  • Responsible for golf course staff, maintenance and equipment.
  • Supervise and control all maintenance expenses associated with golf course operations, including payroll, supplies, equipment, chemicals and fertilizers.
  • Maintains all appropriate licenses including those required to apply fertilizers and other chemicals. The Town will pay for associated fees.
  • Works closely with the Town Manager and Golf Committee to operate the Golf Course in a fiscally responsible and professional manner.
  • Open the Course at the beginning of the season. Specific tasks include maintaining the equipment, ensuring the sprinkler system is in working order, cutting the grass, raking the sand traps and getting the course into generally accepted playable conditions.
  • Close the Course at the end of the season. Specific tasks include ensuring the water system, pipes and sprinklers are drained of water prior to the island shutdown. All sprinkler heads are covered and protected for the winter. The golf carts and other equipment is stored properly for the winter. Provide year end maintenance on equipment as required.
  • Administer and enforce course policies as put forth in the Policy Handbook
  • Begin work when the Island opens for Town Employees (Generally between April 5 and April 12)
  • End work when the Island closes for Town Employees (Approximately November 15)
  • Average approximately 48 hours of work each week


STAFF

  • Hires, trains, schedules, and supervises the golf course staff. 
  • Oversees subordinates in proper and safe operation and maintenance of mechanical and power equipment. 
  • Conducts employee performance evaluations.

EQUIPMENT

  • Ensure proper operation and maintenance of all golf course equipment. 
  • Order parts, supplies and equipment as needed. 
  • Maintain complete maintenance records of all equipment.
  • Maintain a tabulation of all golf course equipment detailing all pertinent data.
  • Maintain, clean and fuel golf cart fleet.
  • Provide information to the Golf Committee regarding the Long Term Capital Improvements Plan
  • Maintain listing of all capital assets to include life expectancy.


COURSE

  • Supervise and participate in mowing greens, tees, fairways, and rough,
  • Supervise and participate in the maintenance of sand traps.
  • Supervise and participate in the seeding, planting, fertilization, chemical application, and other care of greens, tees, fairways and roughs.
  • Supervise and participate in maintaining operation of the irrigation system.
  • Supervise and participate in the operation of the driving range.
  • Purchase materials necessary to maintain the golf course.
  • Direct and participate in the construction of capital projects.


MISCELLANEOUS

  • Communicate regularly with the Golf Committee to discuss operational issues and capital improvements.
  • Provide basic maintenance in the pro shop and lounge as requested by the Pro Shop and Lounge Manager.
  • Cut the grass, fertilize and maintain the irrigation systems at the Community Center and Ball Field.
  • Perform assigned tasks and other duties as assigned by the Town Manager.


REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Maine Board of Pesticides Control Commercial Masters Applicators license.
  • Associate degree or higher in Agronomy or related field preferred
  • Experience in management and supervision of personnel

RIVERSIDE GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT - Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department – Full-Time (37.5 hours), year-round position with ability to work non-conventional hours year round. CITY OF PORTLAND, MAINE - PARKS, RECREATION & FACILITIES DEPARTMENT Riverside Golf Course is owned and operated by the City of Portland. The popular and traditional public golf facility first opened in 1932. The facility features an 18-hole course, a 9-hole course and a 3-hole practice course. The classic layout, rolling hills and tree-line fairways are bordered by the Presumpscot River. With over 50,000 rounds per year combined between the 18-hole and 9-hole course and over 600 members, Riverside is a very popular and busy golf course. About the Position: ● Performs responsible administrative and supervisory work overseeing and directing the maintenance of the Riverside Golf Course and related facilities. ● Utilizes golf course technical expertise to perform advanced technical operations, maintenance and construction tasks. ● Manages, plans and schedules all aspects of golf course maintenance and repairs. ● Interviews, makes hiring recommendations, trains and evaluates golf course maintenance employees. ● Selects and procures golf course maintenance equipment, materials, supplies, services. ● Assists in the preparation of equipment bid specifications. ● Ensures the proper care, operations, preventive maintenance and repair of golf course equipment, attachments and tools. ● Maintains and prepares a variety of records and reports to the Golf Course Manager. ● Implements and supervises safety and efficiency practices. ● Assists in developing and monitoring the annual golf course maintenance budget and recommends golf course capital improvement projects. ● Directs and supervises subordinate staff in the maintenance, repair and construction of tees, greens, fairways, ponds, roughs, cart paths, sand traps, trees, plants, shrubs and related areas. ● Analyzes disease, insect and other turf grass stress problems. ● Selects and applies pesticides, fertilizers and other controls to resolve problems. ● Operates, maintains, repairs, troubleshoots and constructs irrigation systems. ● Directs, supervises and oversees construction projects as assigned. ● Prepares or oversees preparation of specifications, contracts, documents, written, oral reports. ● Evaluates the work performance of golf course maintenance staff. ● Promotes positive and effective public relations. ● Prepares and maintains winter recreational areas, including cross country ski trails, sledding areas and ice-skating ponds at the golf course and City parks. ● Performs related work as required. Requirements of Work: ● College degree related to turf/grass management or any equivalent combination of training and golf course maintenance experience. Minimum 5 years of experience in golf course management operations at a Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent level. ● Extensive knowledge and experience in the equipment, tools, materials, methods and standard practices used in the maintenance of golf course grounds, equipment and related facilities. ● Extensive knowledge and experience in turf grass management, soil conditions, agronomy and golf facility construction principles. ● Extensive knowledge and experience in organic land care practices. ● Extensive knowledge in the operation, installation and repair of irrigation and drainage systems, and of turf and insect problems. ● Experience in supervising and directing employees in golf course maintenance operations. ● Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, other City departments, supervisors, employees, vendors and outside service providers. ● Experience in preparing specifications for equipment and supplies. ● Ability to supervise the safe operation, preventive maintenance and repair of mowers, vehicles, tractors, tools and equipment used in golf course maintenance. ● Ability to operate a variety of tools and equipment used in golf course maintenance operations. ● Extensive knowledge and experience in golf course maintenance budget preparation, management and inventory control. Excellent communications and organizational skills. ● Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills. ● Thorough knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting golf course maintenance operations including employment, health, safety and environmental stewardship standards. ● Fundamental understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of golf. ● Experience preparing and maintaining winter recreation areas, including cross country ski trails, sledding and outdoor ice-skating areas. Necessary Special Requirements: ● Must possess a valid State of Maine Class C driver's license. ● Must have and maintain a good driving record. ● Maine Pesticide Masters License with Turf Category. OVERVIEW

Responsible for the overall operation of golf course maintenance. These responsibilities include turf grass maintenance, property management, irrigation maintenance, pesticide applications and recording, personnel management,  and member relations. The golf course superintendent works to create an environment where staff is enthusiastic, with open communication and respect for themselves, members, guests, and the property. The candidate must be able to work within the Audubon Sanctuary Program guidelines.

 

BASIC FUNCTIONS

  • Directs and participates in the construction and maintenance of the grounds
  • Administers and enforces cart rules, regulations, and policies for staff
  • Is able to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver
  • Is able to work closely with pro shop personnel for play schedule and coordination of special projects

 

EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge of maintenance and best practices for turf maintenance
  • Knowledge of equipment and the operation of tools used in golf course maintenance and construction
  • Knowledge of safe use, the mixing of chemical applications for commercial use, within Audubon Sanctuary Program limitations
  • Ability to anticipate equipment and material requirements related to golf course maintenance and repairs

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 3-5 years’ experience as a golf course superintendent or as a first assistant
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Possess a current pesticide applicator’s license or able to be certified within three months of hire

The club opened in 1916 and has a growing membership that is active on the golf course, tennis courts and beach area which sits on the south end of Lake Cobbosseecontee.   • Order supplies and materials on a timely basis within budgetary limitations
  • Prepare yearly maintenance budget.
  • Possess the ability to prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Possesses thorough knowledge of drainage control methods, watering, and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls.
  • Knowledge of tree management and removal is helpful.
  • Monitor and ensure ice buildup does not occur on green surfaces.
  • Snow Removal around the maintenance and club house area.
